Voladores de Papantla

When we got off the bus at Teotihuacan we were treated to a performance by the Totonac voladores.  Originally performed as an ancient symbolic ceremony only once a year in Papantla this traditional rite can now be seen daily in several tourist destinations including los Piramides.  The performance begins with the voladores, dressed in elaborate costumes and playing traditional instruments, sitting atop a 30m high pole playing music and arranging their ropes.  All at once they dive backward as if bungee jumping in slow motion and proceed to spin upside down around the pole all the while continuing to play their instruments.
